Block de Esquerda asks the government about measures to help farmers affected by bad weather

Bloco de Esquerda (BE) wants to know what measures the government will take to compensate for the loss of farmers due to the hail and heavy rains that hit Alijo, Murs and Carraceda de Anciaes.

In a question submitted to the Assembly of the Republic and published this Friday, BE, through deputy Pedro Filipe Soares, asked the government about the damage done to agriculture by the bad weather that hit the Tras os Montes region this week.

Since Sunday, there have been hail and heavy rain situations that have hit olive groves, vineyards, apple orchards and natural orchards for the population in areas of the municipalities of Alijo and Mursa, Vila Real area, and Carraceda de Anciaes, in the district of Braganca.

On Tuesday in Mursa, due to heavy rain and the resulting upwelling of the stream, a road bridge near the village of Ribeirinha collapsed, but roads and paths were also affected, and in the Porre area, it was hail that hit the vines.

In Carlao, Alijo municipality, hail on Tuesday and heavy rain on Wednesday hit vineyards and olive groves and even caused flooding, as well as damaging about a hundred kilometers of agricultural roads needed for farmers to get to work. their lands.

“The Left Bloc considers it necessary that the government consider the losses and take measures to support these producers so that they can compensate for the large losses as soon as possible and thus return to their activities,” the party stressed.

In this sense, MP Pedro Filipe Soares wants to know whether the Ministry of Agriculture is aware of this situation, whether it has already carried out or intends to carry out a survey of the damage caused by bad weather in the Trás os area. Montes and Alto Douro, and finally when the government will take action to compensate these farmers.

On Wednesday, in response to a request for information from the Lusa agency, the Department of Agriculture said it was “concretely assessing” the damage caused by bad weather in Tras os Montes, noting “a final incident report will be released as soon as possible.” .

Due to bad weather, farmers and mayors turned to the government for support.

In response, the ministry said on Wednesday that “a review of information that allows us to conclude whether the affected producers are crop insurers or not” is still ongoing.

“In accordance with these elements and the final incident report, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food will analyze what measures should be taken, respectively, within the foreseen response to such incidents,” he stressed.
