On the 25th and 26th, the Prime Minister will make his first official visit to Timor-Leste, a trip aimed at deepening bilateral economic relations and cooperation in areas such as sustainable development.
The note, released by António Costa’s office, also mentions that the visit by the Portuguese chief executive will be the first visit by a foreign head of government since the new Timorese chief executive took office on 1 July.
“Twenty-one years after Timor-Leste gained national independence, Portugal remains committed to strengthening the bonds of cooperation, friendship and solidarity. This visit will deepen bilateral relations with Timor-Leste, in particular in the economic sphere, the Portuguese language, mobility, sustainability and response to global challenges,” the same note says.
During António Costa’s stay in Timor-Leste, from an institutional point of view, meetings are scheduled with the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, with the President of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste, Fernanda Ley, and with the Prime Minister Timorese Minister Xanana Gusmão.
In addition to the institutional component, the program also includes initiatives and visits within the framework of cooperation between Portugal and Timor-Leste, one of the member states of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
