The Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, Manuel Clemente, has asked that his name not be applied to a bicycle bridge over the Trancao River after controversies that have arisen in recent days, the patriarchate said on Monday.
“The Patriarchate of Lisbon announces that D. Manuel Clemente has requested that the bicycle bridge over the Trancao River not be named after him,” a statement released today said, adding that the patriarch “thanks for the attention of the Lisbon city council, but in no way wants the attribution caused controversy or to make someone feel offended.”
According to the note, “World Youth Day wanted, on the contrary, to be an opportunity for everyone to meet again, in favor of a more just and cohesive society.”
