The head of the PSD/SDS-PP list for the regional regions of Madeira this Monday refused to discriminate against municipalities due to their different political coloring, but emphasized that the elections of the archipelago’s executive are at stake on Sunday.
“What is at stake is not the election of the mayor or the election of the presidents of the councils, but the election of the government for the present and future of the autonomous region of Madeira,” said Miguel Albuquerque at a rally in Machico, a municipality led by the PS.
Refusing to ever discriminate against the municipality of Machico “under any circumstances”, the leader of the Somos Madeira coalition assured that whenever he visited the municipality he was “treated well”.
“I have no complexes, no prejudices, I have made all the investments that I had to make here, and I have always done it with great honor,” assured Miguel Albuquerque, who has been the Madeira CEO since 2015. promising that if he is elected to Madeira’s legislature on Sunday, he will continue to invest in Machico.
“There is no problem with that,” he added, listing three “fundamental works that he wants to carry out in Machico: the restoration of the sports infrastructure of the municipality, namely the athletics track, the retraining of the Marosos school and the support of fishermen” in the infrastructure. and everything they need.”
In addition, he continued, the regional government will continue to build housing for young people, and the executive has already reached an agreement with the mayor, the socialist Ricardo Franco, to complete the construction of Fort São João Baptista, and the contract for the program has already been awarded. reconstruction of the Porto da Cruz cemetery, the work will be paid for by the executive branch.
“It never occurred to me, even if I imagine […] leave Machico, I will become the president of all Madeirans if elected,” he said, assuring that he would also “serve the people of Machico.”
Before the intervention of Miguel Albuquerque, the leader of the CDS-PP and number two on the list of the Somos Madeira coalition mentioned the problem of rising fuel prices, highlighting that in the region the Madeira executive uses “taxes to have cheaper fuel, to have cheaper diesel.”
“Do you know how much a liter of diesel fuel costs? In Madeira it costs 1.50 euros, in Lisbon on the mainland it costs 1.75. In Madeira, a liter costs 25 cents less, and if we fill up a 50-liter tank, we save 12 Euros and a half in wood and fuel still coming here from the continent. For this purpose, taxation serves the population,” he said.
In the previous regional elections in 2019, the PSD failed to win an absolute majority in the region for the first time since 1976, opting to make a coalition commitment with the SDS-PP to guarantee its continuity in governance.
There are 13 candidates vying for 47 regional parliament seats in one constituency in Madeira’s legislative elections on Sunday.
PTP, JPP, BE, PS, Chega, RIR, MPT, ADN, PSD/CDS-PP (Somos Madeira coalition), PAN, Livre, CDU (PCP/PEV) and IL are the political forces vying for the vote.
In the previous regional elections, the Social Democrats elected 21 deputies, and the SDS-PP – three deputies of parliament. The PS received 19 mandates, the AKP – three and the CDU – one.
