Chega appealed this Monday to the President of the Republic with a request to the Constitutional Court to preemptively control the increase in the single road tax (UTT) and proposed a maximum increase of 25% in four years if the government insists on this measure.
“We ask, we appeal to the President of the Republic to preemptively submit to the Constitutional Court this increase in the IUC for a gross violation of the Constitution,” Cega President André Ventura addressed a press conference at the party headquarters. , in Lisbon.
Chegi’s leader said that this measure, envisaged in the draft state budget for 2024, which will still be discussed and voted on in parliament, “is completely unconstitutional because it violates the principle of proportionality.”
However, if the government “insists on the blindness of the IUC increase”, the Chega parliamentary group will propose that the socialist executive “adopt a clause for a maximum increase of 25% over the next four years.”
André Ventura also said that the party was organizing a “huge national protest” on November 4 in the Marquês de Pombal district of Lisbon against the increase in the IUC, which was originally planned to take place in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance. but was changed for “security reasons”.
The Chegi leader admitted that he “still has hope” that Prime Minister Antonio Costa will “agree to some changes in this matter.”
“But if this hope does not come true and if the finance minister remains intransigent in this area, we very much hope that the entire Portuguese people will be able to protest against this cruel tax increase,” he urged.
