Ines Yolanda, the 34-year-old woman accused of killing her newborn son last July by abandoning him in a dumpster in Mealhada, broke her silence at the first hearing of this Monday in the Aveiro court. The testimony, which lasted one hour, was given behind closed doors at the request of the defendant’s defense. “Given the nature of the process and its sensitivity, I realized that this was the best way to ensure the defense was carried out,” he says CM Carlos Santos Silva, Inez’s lawyer. During the meeting, police inspectors and three PPR servicemen who were at the scene of the discovery of the newborn were also interviewed. The PSP agent on duty at the Coimbra hospital where the accused was admitted after suffering serious bleeding was also questioned. “The gynecologist contacted me and said that Inez said that she abandoned her son in a container,” he said. Ines is charged with qualified murder and desecration of a corpse.
