This Thursday, the Assembly of the Republic joined the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated on December 3, welcoming “people with disabilities, their families and organizations that defend their rights.”
The welcome vote was presented by the Committee on Labour, Social Security and Integration and unanimously approved in plenary.
The vote also defends the need to “pursue a path of inclusion and integration” and Parliament’s obligation to “continuously promote the deepening, recognition and guarantee of the rights of people with disabilities.”
“Effective inclusion of people with disabilities is a hallmark of any healthy democracy, which must be on an ongoing path towards the full inclusion of all citizens,” the text emphasizes.
The text argues that public decision makers must “outline, update, develop, improve, listen to stakeholders to develop and implement good public policy, constantly striving for true inclusion, towards a more democratic, fair, equal and inclusive society ” society”.
On October 14, 1992, the UN General Assembly decided to establish the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
“This is a day that should inspire us all to work together to continue and deepen the removal of barriers and the promotion of equal opportunities,” the vote states, deeming it essential that Portugal “continues to promote more favorable, balanced legislation and action. fair, inclusive and respectful of the rights of our fellow citizens with disabilities, challenging and eliminating the various obstacles that remain in the path to these rights in order to guarantee a dignified and independent life.”
