Israel thanks US for UN position on resolution approved Friday

This Saturday, the Israeli Prime Minister thanked the US President for the American position in the UN Security Council, which adopted a resolution to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip without demanding a ceasefire in the war against Hamas.

Benjamin Netanyahu expressed to US President Joe Biden his “appreciation for the US position on the UN Security Council”, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

“It also made clear that Israel will continue the war until all its goals are achieved,” namely the destruction of Hamas and the release of all hostages still held captive by the Islamist group in the Gaza Strip, he added.

The UN Security Council on Friday approved a resolution aimed at increasing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip after a week of intense negotiations.

The initiative, presented by the United Arab Emirates, had to be rewritten several times due to objections from the United States, which had veto power in the body and ultimately abstained.

The text asks UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to appoint a special coordinator to monitor and verify the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, called the resolution “insufficient” because it does not call for a permanent ceasefire.

“The US administration has gone to great lengths to strip this resolution of its essence and promulgate it in this weak formulation, which allows the fascist occupation to complete its mission of destruction, murder and terrorism in the Gaza Strip, defying the will of the international community.” , he added.

The US has twice vetoed UN resolutions calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Since the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas began on October 7, the Gaza Strip, where more than 20,200 people have been killed, has experienced an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with shortages of drinking water, food, medicine, electricity and fuel. , as well as the collapse of hospitals and the emergence of epidemics in the middle of winter.

Although Israel allows truckloads of humanitarian aid into the enclave, it arrives gradually and in insufficient quantities for the 1.9 million displaced people – almost the entire population of the sector – as Israeli authorities take time to thoroughly inspect each truck. ..before he entered the enclave.

Israel has declared war on Hamas after the Islamist group’s brutal attack on Israeli soil left more than 1,200 people dead.
