The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), PSP and GNR are launching the Travel Safely campaign on Tuesday, which will run until the 22nd and aims to prevent the risks of speeding.
Included in the National Inspection Plan (PNF) for 2024, it is the first of 12 information and inspection campaigns planned for this year, which will be carried out monthly, the PSP said in a statement.
As part of the “Travele Slowly” campaign, ANSR will conduct awareness-raising campaigns throughout the country, and inspection operations “with special emphasis on roads and access roads with heavy traffic flow” will be assigned to the Public Security Police. and the Republican National Guard.
Speeding “is one of the leading causes of road accidents,” being the number one cause of “a third of all fatalities,” as well as “more than 60% of reported violations.”
Confirming that “the likelihood of a fatality increases with the speed of vehicles”, ANSR, PSP and GNR state that “if a vehicle is traveling at 30 km/h (kilometers per hour), the likelihood of a fatality is 10%” reaching 80% when speed increases to 50 km/h.
They also note that “on a 20-kilometre trip, increasing speed from 50 to 60 km/h saves just four minutes.”
The priority topics for the 2024 PNF are speed, alcohol, safety accessories and mobile phones, same as last year, to which ‘two-wheeler check’ has been added.
