The PSD/Madeira today convened a meeting of the Regional Council for Thursday to discuss the political situation in the archipelago following the resignation of the President of the Executive, Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque.
According to the party, the meeting of the highest body of the Madeira Social Democrats between congresses will take place at the Madeira Congress Center in Funchal, with statements to the media expected at the end of the meeting, around 19:00.
A meeting of the PSD/Madeira Regional Council was scheduled for Monday to confirm the name of Miguel Albuquerque’s successor as head of the regional government (PSD/SDS-PP), but was eventually canceled on the same day after the leader’s executive director formalized his resignation with the representative of the Republic Ireneu Barreto.
The representative accepted the resignation of Miguel Albuquerque, but clarified that he had not yet decided on what date it would take effect, acknowledging that this could only happen after the discussion and approval of the Regional Budget for this year in the Legislative Assembly, which should happen next year. a week.
Miguel Albuquerque announced on Friday that he would resign, two days after he was named as a defendant in a trial investigating alleged corruption in Madeira that led to the arrest of Funchal Mayor Pedro Calado (PSD) and two businessmen linked to the construction industry. and the tourism sector.
On Monday, following a meeting with a representative of the Republic, Albuquerque refused to say who would be appointed instead, adding that he would again meet with party authorities.
“There will be informal meetings with the party leadership in order to find a solution that meets the interests of this majority. [PSD/CDS-PP, com acordo de incidência parlamentar com o PAN] and is in the interests of the people of Madeira,” he said.
Albuquerque also announced that he would remain president of the PSD/Madeira until a new congress, the date of which has not yet been set, but that he would not serve as a deputy in the Regional Legislative Assembly.
Madeira’s government president has been named as a defendant in the investigation, which is looking into allegations of corruption, abuse of power, malfeasance, attacks on the rule of law and other crimes.
