PSD leader Luis Montenegro agreed this Wednesday to the opening of an investigation into the protest of PSP and GNR agents at the Capitol in Lisbon amid doubts “about the rule of law,” arguing that “no one is above the law.”
“If there are doubts about the observance of the law, I repeat once again: no one is above the law. I said this many weeks ago regarding the protests of the security forces. No one is above the law,” Montenegro said.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the presentation of the Social Pact of the Portuguese Business Confederation (CIP) in Porto, the PSD leader said he agreed with the opening of an investigation. “If there was, I don’t know whether there was an exaggeration of the prospect and the legality that was envisaged, it naturally should be questioned. I think it is very good that an investigation has been launched into this matter,” he added.
On Monday, after some 3,000 PSP and GNR members gathered in Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio, many of them headed to the Capitol, where the election debate between Pedro Nuno Santos and Luis Montenegro was taking place, in a spontaneous march that was not authorized.
Meanwhile, the PSP national director has ordered an internal investigation into the circumstances of the police protest at the Capitol, taking into account the “possible involvement of PSP police officers in an unregistered protest.”
