Former journalist and communist leader Fernando Correia died this Friday at the age of 81, the PCP said in a statement, without specifying the cause of death.
Fernando António Pinheiro Correia was born in Coimbra on July 4, 1942. From 1970 to April 25, 1974, he worked as a journalist for Diário Popular and Diário de Lisboa, and as editor-in-chief of the magazine Seara Nova.
According to PCP, Fernando Correia studied at the University of Lisbon, where he received a degree in philosophy and was the leader of an association, namely the Pro-Associação da Faculdade de Letras.
“He made a valuable contribution to the preparation of the first legal edition of Avante! May 17, 1974, namely by making his home available for meetings in which he actively participated together with Alvaro Cunhal and some of the future editors,” say the communists.
Fernando Correia was a journalist and deputy editor-in-chief of Avante! from May 1974 to January 1986, the year he joined the editorial board of Vida Council magazine, the statement also says.
