“No one can replace the will of the people”: Marcelo addresses the vote and warns that “letting go is the worst decision”

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, recalled this Saturday that no one can “replace the will of the people,” making it clear that “giving up weapons is the worst solution.” On the eve of the elections, the head of state emphasized the importance of voting and called on the Portuguese to come to the polls on Sunday.

Marcelo considered the need to speed up the recovery of the Portuguese economy as one of the common challenges between the 2022 and 2024 elections.

The President of the Republic also touched on the impact that wars have had on areas such as health, housing and education, warning that they have created a “waiting period” for young people, especially unemployment,” and have prevented “the much-desired economic recovery.” “Post-Covid-19 period.

“In times like these, when wars have reignited economic and trade wars that we had hoped would have been overcome by the end of the pandemic, these are the times when it is most important to vote,” the head of state said.

“What will happen there this year and in the years to come?” – the president asked, believing that this is a “hushed concern” that ultimately determines everything else.

In his message, the president encouraged participation even by those who are “tired or disillusioned” and emphasized that it is in “bigger moments like this that it is most important to vote.”

The head of state also recalled that 2024 “marks 50 years since April 25 and 49 years since the first direct vote of all women and men over 18 years of age in Portugal,” hinting at parliamentary elections. Constituent Assembly 1975.

“A half-century cycle in our history ends and another opens with new challenges, new demands, new ambitions, but always with the same values: democracy, freedom and equality,” he said.

Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said that we must now “give new life in stability and security to our freedom, our equality, our democracy.”

“Only your voice decides, only your voice chooses,” he concluded.
