PS wants consensus on fighting corruption, but highlights the limitations of the Constitution

This Friday, the PS declared its commitment to political consensus on the fight against corruption, especially in matters of lobbying and legislative influence, but warned of the risks of unconstitutionality in issues such as confiscation and illicit enrichment.

This position was voiced by the president of the PS parliamentary group, Alexandra Leitão, following a meeting with the Minister of Justice Rita Judice as part of the hearings held by the government to adopt a package of measures to combat corruption. . within 60 days.

“This was the first meeting, and the PS naturally expressed its full readiness to negotiate and work with the government and other parties to achieve common goals – to make the fight against corruption more effective,” said Alexandra Leitan.

The Socialist Party chairman said that in the previous legislature, lobbying and legislative influence remained unregulated – “two issues on which there is great agreement.”

“We will have to think about some aspects of the AD (Democratic Alliance) election program that are part of the government program this Friday that are questionable from a constitutional point of view, namely confiscation and illicit enrichment. The latter has already been discussed. the subject of decisions of the Constitutional Court,” he noted.

In other words, according to Alexandra Leitão, the PS, although it does not rule out working on these issues, “views some measures with some concern.”

“The work must be carried out in strict accordance with the Constitution. We frankly expressed our point of view to the Government. Now let’s see what the Government’s position is on this matter. It was a very useful conversation, and we’ll see how it continues,” he added.

In front of journalists, Alexandra Leitan also recalled that in 2019 the parliament approved a transparency package, which culminated in the creation of the Transparency Structure, which is now fully functional.

Then, in 2021, an anti-corruption package was implemented, resulting in the Anti-Corruption Mechanisms.

“Any of these reforms must have time to work, be evaluated and not be canceled. Our idea is to be fully available for improvement to make it more efficient. [o combate à corrupção]but we also emphasize that we already had these two very important points,” the leader of the socialist bench emphasized.
