Nuno Melo rejects the idea that the CDS was a “crutch” and the PSD a “surrogate mother” in the last legislative elections.

The SDS-PP president this Saturday rejected the claim that his party was the mainstay in the last legislative elections, as well as the PSD, a coalition partner in the Democratic Alliance, a “surrogate belly”, insisting that the centrists played a decisive role in the elections. result.

“Neither SDS-NP was a crutch, nor SDS was a surrogate mother. The votes of both were absolutely decisive for the victory over the PS and the left and the new political cycle,” considered Nuno Melo at the entrance to the 31st 1st Congress of the CDS-PP, which will take place this Saturday and Sunday in Viseu.

In his opinion, “the SDS also showed its usefulness thanks to the votes it received from the right” in the legislative elections on March 10, in which the centrists voted for the Democratic Alliance coalition, uniting the SDP, SDS-PP and PPM.

“CDS was decisive, CDS did not enter where it is,” he emphasized.

Nuno Melo emphasized that the centrists are in a government coalition with the PSD, which “bears its uniqueness” as a “Christian-democratic, humanistic, personalist party, open to liberal and conservative movements.”

“The coalition would not make any sense if the SDU did not add, the SRS did not add, did not add votes, mandates and our uniqueness. We are not diluting ourselves,” he assured.

The centrist leader believed that this Saturday he will present the CDS “in a much better state than at the 2022 rally,” when he was elected president, in Guimarães.

“We have returned the CDS to almost its rightful place as a founding party, historical but also with a great future, since we are already in government, solving the problems of the people,” he defended.

After introducing a global strategic movement called “Time to Resistance” at the last major meeting of the centrists, Melo emphasized that at this meeting he would introduce himself to congressmen with a text in which he argues that now is the “Time to Grow.”

“In this case, the party must update the message, call on people to rely on the best, solve existing problems, namely through parliamentary action and through government, in areas that are under public ownership in terms of defense and internal governance. but not only,” he said.

Melo stressed that the CDS “is a useful party that solves problems, has capable cadres” and considers itself “a factor of stability.”

The CDS-PP will meet this Saturday and Sunday in congress to re-elect Nuno Melo as president and elect new bodies, about a month after the legislative elections that marked the party’s return to parliament and government.
