The US Internet giants’ annual results were released this week and, as expected, are disastrous, raising fears of a new wave of layoffs. Amazon, the e-commerce leader, posted a €2.4bn loss in 2022, compared to a €30bn profit the previous year, contributing to its first loss-making year since 2014. The company founded by Jeff Bezos announced its layoffs in early January. out of 18,000 workers, which is 6% of its workforce. In addition, Alphabet, which owns Google and YouTube, performed lower than expected as accounts were hit by reduced ads. The €69.7bn revenue represents just 1% growth compared to 2021, with the video platform earning €7.2bn (an 8% drop). Profit fell 52% to $12.4 billion. The poor results forced the company, led by Sundar Pichai, to announce the layoff of 12,000 employees worldwide. Also, Apple, the only one that has not yet moved with massive layoffs, revealed a significant drop in turnover in 2022, which has not been seen since 2019, with revenue of 106.8 billion (5.5% less). Profits fell 13% to $27.3 billion. Finally, Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, was the only pleasant surprise. The Mark Zuckerberg giant posted a profit of 106.3 billion euros, representing a drop of just 1%. Profit fell 41% to $21.1 billion.
