Chega announced on Tuesday that he would hold a debate in parliament on Thursday, May 2, over Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s claims of reparations for Portugal’s colonial past.
The party wants to understand whether the government intends to pay compensation to the former Portuguese colonies.
“We call on the Foreign Secretary to attend the debate where we will discuss, analyze and point out what is one of the greatest betrayals of our homeland,” the statement said.
Last week, the President of the Republic acknowledged Portugal’s responsibility for crimes committed during the colonial era, offering to pay reparations for past mistakes.
“We have to pay the costs. Are there actions that were not punished and the perpetrators were not arrested? Are there goods that were looted and not returned? Let’s see how we can correct this,” Marcelo said at a dinner with foreign correspondents. in Portugal, quoted by Reuters.
