The Supreme Court increased the prison term for former minister Armando Vara to five and a half years

The Supreme Court (STJ) increased the prison sentence of former minister Armando Vara to five years and six months, in addition to the legal penalties imposed in the Face Oculta and Operação Marquês cases.

According to the STJ ruling, which Lusa accessed this Friday, the consulting judges upheld the appeal of the Office of the Public Prosecutor (OP), which intended to sentence the former ruler to a minimum of five and a half years in prison, on top of the legal court decision of March 2023, which imposed the punishment of five years and one month in prison.

Armando Vara was sentenced to five years in prison in the Face Oculta case for three crimes related to influence peddling and was released from Évora prison in October 2021, after serving about three years, due to exceptional measures. measures related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, in July 2021, the court sentenced him to two years in prison for money laundering in the Operation Marquês case.
