Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro said on Monday that the ongoing investigation into the Muraria fire that killed two people would allow “all those responsible” to be identified.
“We will wait for the progress of the investigation that the Judicial Police is conducting, because, naturally, all duties will be investigated as part of the ongoing investigation,” he said.
Arriving at the Republican National Guard Emergency Protection and Relief Detachment Day ceremony in Coimbra this morning, José Luis Carneiro mourned the death of the two men, as well as the inhumane conditions they lived in.
When asked who is responsible for oversight and protection in this area, the government spokesman stressed that matters of municipal importance are “responsible at the local level.”
“So that’s where you should try to figure out what really happened. I think investigations are ongoing,” he added.
On Saturday evening, a fire broke out in a building in Lisbon’s Muraria district, killing two Indians and injuring 14, all of whom have already been discharged from the hospital.
A fire in a building occupied mostly by Indian citizens injured 25 people, 24 residents and one non-resident, leaving 22 people homeless, in addition to the deaths of two Indian citizens, one of whom was a 14-year-old boy.
The Muraria Building in Lisbon will be inspected this afternoon this afternoon, according to the municipal civil protection service.
