PKP leader warns of restrictions on freedom of speech in parliament

The Secretary General of the PKP said this Saturday that the problem with freedom of expression is that it does not know what its limits are, referring to the position of the President of the Assembly of the Republic regarding the opinions of deputies.

“Now I will come to the plenary session next Wednesday, ask for the floor and say everything I want, without restrictions. It seems that this is not a good way,” said Paulo Raimundo, emphasizing that the deputies “had to swear to respect and abide by the Constitution of the Republic” and that it is “perfectly clear.”

On the sidelines of a CDU dinner/rally in Funchal as part of the campaign for early regional elections on May 26 in Madeira, the communist leader reacted to the fact that the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Aguiar Branco allowed Chega leader Andre Ventura to continue his intervention on Friday, saying that “the Turks are not exactly known as the hardest working people in the world.”

Aguiar-Branco considered that it was not his responsibility to censor the positions or opinions of deputies, transferring possible criminal liability for parliamentary speeches to the prosecutor’s office.

“I didn’t want to downplay the significance of this event, but I think it should be placed in the right place,” said Paulo Raimundo, recalling that a leadership conference was called to consider the case and that PCP was there to voice its opinion. .

The Communist General Secretary stressed that he did not want to “give a central place” to this issue, but believed that this issue was within the bounds of freedom of speech.

“Freedom of expression is freedom of expression, now freedom of expression is not a right in itself, it cannot be separated from other rights enshrined in the Constitution and there is one that is very clear,” he said, stressing that the problem arises because that there are no restrictions on freedom of expression for them.

“What’s the limit? What is a brake? He’s gone,” he said.

During a parliamentary debate on Friday, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco refused to censor and restrict MPs’ freedom of speech after Chegi leader André Ventura questioned the ten years planned for the construction of the new airport, saying: “We can be much better than the Turks , Chinese, Albanians, we will have an airport in five years.”
