Rui Tavares, spokesman for Livre, accused the Prime Minister this Saturday of “following the speech of the extreme right”, criticizing the government’s intention to tighten rules as part of the Migration Action Plan, which will be presented on Monday.
“I believe that Luis Montenegro adheres to extreme right-wing discourse. Portugal is a country that needs immigration and has an obligation to show humanity, solidarity and the ability to think at the European level, also in terms of migration,” he said.
Rui Tavares spoke to journalists upon his arrival at Plaza Francisco Sa Carneiro in Porto, where the Livre rally on feminism in the European Union is taking place – the first action in the European elections campaign to include a party co-representative.
In response to the government’s new migration plan, which will be presented on Monday, Tavares asked European leaders “not to fail the test of humanity, solidarity and decency” and criticized the chief executive in particular.
“And by the way, don’t fail the test of Portugal’s future, which is to have people capable of performing a wide variety of functions in an economy that wants to be more specialized and more complex. We will not achieve this with a simple minister chasing everything that the far right invents day after day,” he added.
Regarding the action plan, Presidential Administration Minister Antonio Leitán Amaro said in an interview with Diário de Notícias and TSF published this Saturday that it includes a strategy to attract qualified personnel and differentiated treatment of Portuguese speakers, as well as a tougher approach. .
