This Wednesday, the Assembly of the Republic elected its representatives to the highest councils of the Ministry of State and the Judiciary, with the latest elections requiring a two-thirds majority of deputies.
Former Secretary of State Sofia Galvan and lawyer Orlando Massarico were elected to the High Council of the Ministry of State on the proposal of the PSD, while the PS chose Vania Gonçalves and Paulo Valeriu. Chega nominated José Carlos Soares Machado. These candidates received 177 votes in favor, 38 empty and six null.
As for the High Council of Justice, the combined PSD/SDP list received 198 votes in favor, 57 empty votes and six zero votes. Among the candidates put forward by the PSD were Alfredo Castanheira Neves, António José Barradas Leitan, Marta Portocarrero and Gabriela Pinheiro, while the PS once again proposed as effective Andre Miranda, Inés Ferreira Leite and José Manuel Mesquita.
Regarding the High Council of the Judiciary, the Constitution establishes that the Assembly of the Republic is responsible for electing the body’s seven members “by a two-thirds majority of the deputies present, if it exceeds the absolute number.” majority of deputies in power”, which requires, in the current parliamentary framework, the approval of the PS and PSD.
