Air Force warns of personnel layoffs

Air Force Chief General Cartaxo Alves said on Saturday that “effective [do ramo] it becomes less and less” and “is sacrificed daily.”

“We have not been able to stop the sudden departure of highly qualified personnel,” and this “does not allow us to look to the future with the security we would like.” Therefore, the Air Force, at whose 72nd anniversary ceremony in Portimão he spoke, “is not competitive with the civilian market.”

Kartaço Alves called on the country to “look objectively” at the problem and warned that “time is not on our side and there is no institution that can counter theft.” He wished “more and better quality of life” for soldiers and families, announcing “more doctors” in units and, in a second phase, social workers. He called for more “permanent vacancies to regenerate personnel and increase retention.” He reiterated the urgency of “the inevitable replacement of the F-16s, with 30 years of service, with the F-35, to avoid being isolated in the NATO operational context and avoiding the difficulties of modernization,” and the purchase of the A-29 Super Toucan.

Defence Minister Nuno Melo said the increase in investment in the Armed Forces would begin with an increase in the military’s “salary framework”, a “leap” that “cannot be made overnight, but will be carried out in stages”.
