BE coordinator Katarina Martins this Wednesday hailed the “unprecedented feat” of the Portugal women’s soccer team in qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, highlighting the victories of these athletes “on and off the pitch”.
The Portugal women’s football team qualified for the 2023 World Cup this Wednesday by beating Cameroon 2-1 in the Group A final of the Intercontinental Play-off in Hamilton, New Zealand.
“An unprecedented feat and already with confidence: in a world still so marked by sexism and discrimination, each of these incredible athletes adds to the wins on and off the field,” praised Katarina Martins via Twitter.
This qualification was also welcomed by President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Assembly of the Republic Augusto Santos Silva, Prime Minister António Costa and SDP leader Luis Montenegro.
A penalty kick scored by Carole Costa in the 90+4th minute sealed an unprecedented qualification for the Portuguese after Cameroon’s Adjara Nchut annulled Portugal’s first goal in the 89th minute, scored by Diana Gomez in the 22nd minute.
Francisco Neto’s side join runners-up Netherlands (July 23), Vietnam (27) and US Trophy winners (August 1) in Group E from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
