Leaders in secondary education plummeted during the pandemic

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic years saw a very sharp drop in potential clients in secondary education. The percentage of students who did not finish high school and did not complete it in three years decreased by about a third (from 37% to 24%) between 2018/2019 and 2020/2021.

The percentage of students who completed high school within the expected three-year time frame increased from 62% to 76% over the same period.

In the first academic year during the pandemic (2019/2020), the percentage of students without leads increased from 62% to 69%, and in 2020/21 from 69% to 76%. This is a level of growth never seen in previous years, where fluctuations did not exceed three percentage points.

Principals admit that the changes in the rules due to the pandemic, namely the end of secondary school exams from 2019/2020, have been decisive.

“Changing high school graduation rules to make exams only mandatory for higher education entry may have contributed to the drop in negative numbers,” he told reporters. CM Filinto Lima of the National Association of Group and Public School Principals, stressing that the “learning recovery plan” and “the efforts and dedication of the teachers are also noteworthy.”

According to the Ministry of Education, which does not mention a change in rules due to the pandemic in the statement, 76% of students without credits in science and humanities courses are a record. Students with social actions continue to perform worse, but Grade A students have grown the most in 2020/21 (9 percentage points).

ME also highlights the improvement of professional courses, with the lead-free rate reaching 70%. The best results were noted in the Northern and Central regions.
