A significant proportion of Brazil’s 215 million people are not getting enough food, a Datafolha Institute survey released Tuesday showed. The most serious situation is in the northeastern states of Brazil, where the food shortage described by residents is much higher than the national average.
According to data collected by Datafolha on March 29 and 30, 23% of Brazilians, approximately 49 million people, said they did not have enough homes that day to feed themselves and their families. In nine states in the Northeast, the share of those who reported that they did not have enough food has reached 30% of residents.
The data released now confirms what millions of Brazilians feel with their skin, the inability to adequately feed themselves and their families, but there are worse situations. Surveys last year showed that at least 33 million Brazilians had absolutely nothing to eat and that they could only eat if and when they received a food donation, which was not every day.
However, according to a survey currently conducted by Datafolha in 126 cities across the country, 62% said that food at home is not much, but enough. At the opposite end of the study, another 15% of respondents said that the amount of food they have at home is more than enough for good nutrition.
