Nayola, José Miguel Ribeiro’s first animated feature film based on José Eduardo Agualus and Mia Couto’s short story about the Angolan Civil War, will premiere in Portuguese cinemas on 13 April. In the film, in which the music dictates the rhythm – mainly through the themes of the rapper Medusa, who also gives voice to one of the characters – the story of three generations of women – Lelena (grandmother), Niola (daughter) is poetically told. and Luana (granddaughter) – during the 25-year civil war in Angola. All of them are victims of the conflict in one way or another, their fate is shown through a narrative based on “mysterious disappearance, epic transition and unwavering love”, as José Miguel Ribeiro stated in a presentation at Sao Jorge in Lisbon. The session also brought rapper Meduza, an important part of the “soul” of the project, to Lisbon as she voices the concerns of a new generation: “The war has greatly shaken the structure of the country and has not contributed to our development. We still feel the war in our own skin,” he says. This project, a co-production between Praça Filmes (Portugal), SOIL (Belgium), JPL Films (France), il Luster (Netherlands) and Luna Blue Film (Belgium), has already resulted in a book.
