Eleven people have died and nine have been hospitalized following a gas leak in Ludhiana, northern India’s Punjab state, a state MP said Sunday.
The National Disaster Response Force team arrived at the scene along with a team of experts to determine the cause and origin of the leak, said Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina, a member of the Ludhiana legislature quoted by Reuters.
According to a video posted by the ANI news agency on Twitter, policemen were patrolling the area wearing masks and asking local residents to stay away from the cordoned off area.
“The incident took place near a dairy store and a medical clinic, although we cannot say exactly where the leak originated from,” said Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina. “People who came in the morning for milk were left unconscious on the street,” he added.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted that the flight was coming from an industrial area.
