Doctor found guilty of devising a fake sick leave scheme to receive Social Security subsidies

A gynecologist was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison with a suspended sentence for tax evasion as a result of the development of a fake sick leave scheme that caused almost 96,000 euros in damages to Social Security. A woman who was an accomplice and beneficiary of the falsified declarations of pregnancy and high-risk miscarriage was sentenced to 2 years and 2 months in prison with a suspended sentence.

The panel of judges of the Santarem court took into account the fact that the defendants, aged 37 and 38, confessed to the crime, explaining that they acted out of “pure greed” and that they returned the money they had. wrongfully transferred to the treasury of the state.

The case dates back to 2018, when the couple set up a clinical services company through which the woman declared a monthly salary of 4,750 euros without even having worked there.

At the time, the doctor was working in the Gynecology/Obstetrics Emergency Department at the Hospital de Abrantes, where he illegally used the credentials of two other doctors to access the computer system for prescriptions and referrals.

Using the passwords of his colleagues, the gynecologist registered the woman as a user of the hospital and issued nine sheets of temporary disability in 2020 and 2021 (that is, the respondent, who was not even pregnant during this period.

Social Security paid a total of about 96,000 euros for the fraudulent damages, as the amount was calculated based on the large salary that the woman declared through the service provider.
