A 47-year-old man was arrested on the island of Porto Santo, Madeira, for domestic violence, a crime witnessed on a public road, the PSP regional office said on Monday.
The PSP statement said the detention of the male, a foreign national, took place on Saturday, according to witnesses who witnessed the incident.
According to the PSP, witnesses testified that “the suspect pushed the victim against the wall and, in a continuous action, grabbed her by the head and forced her towards the wall, repeating this gesture several times.”
PSP officers immediately went to the scene and found that people were “preventing the suspect from approaching the victim,” who was removed “from that environment,” the note says.
Also, according to the PSP, “based on the testimony received from the persons who witnessed the violent episode, and taking into account the statements of the victim”, who showed signs of aggression, the suspect was detained, taken to the police station and “represented by the defendants”. and subject to the availability of an identity document and residence, while following the competent steps of the investigation.”
In the note, the PSP recalls that the crime of domestic violence is public and must be brought to the attention of the authorities, who become aware of this in the exercise of their functions.
“In addition, anyone who learns or becomes a witness of facts falling under this type of crime must report it to the appropriate authorities,” the PSP also recalls.
