Spain’s national police arrested four suspects on Tuesday for hanging a doll with Brazilian soccer player Vinicius Junior’s jersey on a bridge near the Real Madrid stadium in the Spanish capital last January.
Four unidentified suspects were arrested in the Spanish capital and charged with “hate crimes”, according to the National Police.
A doll with the face and shirt of a Brazilian athlete from Real Madrid was placed on the bridge before the game with Atlético Madrid.
On Monday, the Real Madrid Brazilian striker asked fans and clubs to be punished for racist acts and said there were already cases in several Spanish cities, releasing videos of insults he was the target of.
“Each ‘round’ away from home was a nasty surprise. And there were a lot of them this season. Death wishes, a hanging doll, many screams of criminals… everything is recorded. ‘ (fan). No. These are not isolated cases. These are continuous episodes scattered across several cities in Spain,” the player said in a message posted on social media.
The 22-year-old Vinicius has been the target of several racist slurs and other offenses in recent months, with the player’s allegations sparking reactions of support for the athlete from FIFA and the governments of Brazil and Spain.
The Spanish judiciary announced earlier this week that it had launched an investigation into racist slurs.
Real Madrid also revealed that they had filed a complaint with the Spanish Attorney General’s Office “for hate crimes and discrimination” against the Brazilian player.
