On a day usually marked by statistics and balance sheets, this Friday, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Matosinhos has been the scene of debate on how to do more and better in the fight against this scourge. “The role of social communication” has served as the watchword for several groups of journalists and case trackers, as well as other represented individuals, who have discussed this topic, seeking to take several paths towards a common understanding: the protection of victims and their families.
The use of the news as a means of disseminating positive outcomes, showing victims that there are support mechanisms and messages that can protect them throughout the process, was highlighted by psychologist Joana Ribeiro, coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Gender Assistance Framework.
With regard to the rehabilitation of the aggressors, José Pinto, coordinator of the Center for Assistance to Victims of Violence “Primeiro Passo”, noted that Portugal has one of the best European programs for this, but faces difficulties due to lack of funds to reach regions far from major urban centers.
The II Portuguese Forum against Violence is an initiative of the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality.
