The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Wednesday expressed his regret over the death of a Portuguese émigré kidnapped in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“After learning of the tragic outcome of the kidnapping of his compatriot from Madeira in Johannesburg, South Africa, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expresses his sincere condolences to his family and friends,” reads a statement posted on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.
The President, in the same note, sends a “word of solidarity to the Portuguese community” in South Africa, with whom he will meet on the occasion of the celebration of the Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will celebrate Portugal Day with Portuguese expatriates in South Africa from 5 to 8 June.
The Madeira Regional Government also mourned the death of an emigrant killed on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to D. N. Funchal, the abducted emigrant, who had a business in the butcher and delicatessen shops, was found already dead, according to a friend.
