Ukrainian national boxer Oleksandr Onishchenko died in a fight near the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, where he fought on the side of his country’s army against Russian troops, the Ukrainian Boxing Federation said on Wednesday.
“Oleksandr died near Bakhmut defending the Ukrainian homeland from the Russian enemy,” the Federation said in a statement posted on its Facebook page, expressing “sincere condolences to the family.”
Alexander Onishchenko was the champion of Ukraine among juniors and won several tournaments held in his country, such as the Carpathian Olympics, Kuzhelny and Arsenov.
“Eternal memory to all those who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of our country,” the Boxing Federation of Ukraine said in a statement.
More than 260 athletes have died in Ukraine as a result of the war caused by the Russian invasion, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Sports, most of them volunteers in the army.
The military offensive launched by Russia on February 24, 2022 in Ukraine was justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security.
The UN presents 8,534 dead and 14,370 wounded civilians as confirmed since the beginning of the war, emphasizing that these figures are far from real.
