Manuel Fernandes, the former Sporting CP coach and player, was operated on for a tumor on Wednesday and was hospitalized.

Last Sunday, Manuel Fernandes, considered the Lions’ second top scorer, was honored in the Alvalada derby.

The 71-year-old Portuguese football player spent most of his career at Sporting. He first reached Lviv in 1975.

After several years at Alvalada, interspersed with experience in the United States of America, Manuel Fernandes moved to Sporting in 1979, where he remained until joining Vitoria in 1987.

In the service of the Lions, the former striker won two championships, two Portuguese Cups and a Super Cup. In the 433 games he played for Sporting, Manuel Fernandes scored 257 goals, making him one of the top goalscorers in Sporting’s history. In the 1985/86 season, he was the league’s top scorer.

The player, who ended his career in 1989 with Vitoria, also played for CUF in Portugal. Manuel Fernandes took his first steps as a coach at Vitoria Football Club. He was the head coach of Sporting in the 2000/01 season.

In recent seasons, he has been the scout coordinator for the Alvalade team.
