A 31-year-old man was arrested Friday for killing four people in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The suspect is the son of Nakano City Council President, Reuters reported.
Local authorities were called on Thursday after receiving reports that a woman had been stabbed outside Nagano City Hall. When they arrived at the scene, the attacker fired his rifle, killing two police officers.
An elderly woman who was the victim of the attack also died from her injuries. After committing the crime, the man barricaded himself in the house, where he hid for more than 12 hours.
Motives for the crime have yet to be established. The Japanese government issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims.
“We pray for the souls of the victims and express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims. The police are investigating to find out the circumstances of the incident,” government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters, quoted by Aljazeera.
