Over 700 detainees released in Iran after victory over Wales at 2022 World Cup

More than 700 prisoners were released this Monday in Iran following Iran’s victory over Wales on Friday in the second round game of the Group B World Cup in Qatar.

This decision was announced this Monday by an agency of the Iranian judiciary, which recalls that after losing 2:6 to England in the first round, the Iranian team, coached by the Portuguese Carlos Queiroz, won the country of Wales 2:0 on Friday and will face USA.

If Iran wins, it will advance to the 1/8 finals of the competition.

“In accordance with the special order of the head of the judiciary, adopted after the victory of the national football team. […] compared to Wales, 709 prisoners were released from different prisons in the country, ”the agency clarifies.

According to IRNA, among those released are “some individuals arrested during recent events,” IRNA added, without elaborating.

By “events,” the news agency is referring to the protests sparked by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died three years after being detained by the vice police for allegedly violating the country’s strict regime. dress code by improperly wearing a “hijab” or an Islamic veil.

Tehran, which considers most of the demonstrations “riots”, accuses “foreign forces” of being behind the protest movement with the intent to destabilize the Islamic Republic.

Since the protests began, at least 426 people have been killed and more than 17,400 arrested, according to Human Rights Defenders in Iran, which monitors the ongoing protest movement, according to which at least 56 Iranian security forces have also been killed. .
