The 15-year-old German football player died this Wednesday after head injuries sustained on Sunday in a game at an international tournament with the French Metz, as well as as a result of clashes between players from both teams.
“Following the Sunday clashes (…) a 15-year-old teenager died in hospital from serious head injuries,” the German police said in a statement.
Initially, according to information provided by various local media outlets in Frankfurt, Germany, it was reported that the player’s brain had died as a result of blows to the head and neck.
The player from the JFC Berlin team was unconscious and had to be resuscitated by being taken to the hospital, where he was soon declared brain dead.
The alleged French aggressor was heard by authorities, though Metz clarified on Monday that he said there was no intention to cause harm.
The 16-year-old man is in custody, the Frankfurt police added, while an investigation into the events continues and while he awaits autopsy results due in the coming days.
Frankfurt prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Nadja Niessen explained that the deceased teenager was on life support until Wednesday so that his organs could be donated.
