Polish referee Szymon Marciniak offered his “most sincere apologies” for attending an event linked to the far right, prompting UEFA to confirm this Friday his appointment to take charge of the Champions League final.
UEFA said in a statement that they were investigating Marciniak’s participation in an event held in Katowice, Poland on May 29, and despite taking the matter “with all seriousness” and “undoubtedly rejecting the values advocated there”, decided not to remove referee from the Champions final scheduled for June 10th.
“After careful review, we have received a statement from Mr. Marciniak expressing his deepest apologies and clarification regarding his participation in this event,” the European football governing body said in a statement.
UEFA released a message from the 42-year-old Polish referee apologizing for his presence at the event and for “any disruption or damage it may have caused”, adding that he was “tricked” and that he was “totally unaware” of the connection with far right organizations.
“Based on the information received, UEFA confirms that Mr. Marciniak will act as referee for the 2023 Champions League final,” the continental organization said in a statement.
