The Portuguese-Brazilian duo defeated Purcell, the Wimbledon champion and world No. 53 in doubles, and Shelton, who promises singles at 20, 6-3 and 6-0 in just over an hour and 10 minutes. .
This is the first time that the top national variant specialist and 57th in the world rankings has reached the third round of a Grand Slam after losing in the second round of Wimbledon and the US Open along with his friend Nuno Borges last year.
Cabral and Matos, the number one Brazilian and 39th in that hierarchy, began their partnership in mid-May after the Portuguese played alongside eight other players this season, including Purcell.
The duo will meet in the third round with the fourth seed of the Parisian “major” pair, North American Austin Krajicek (5th place in the doubles ranking) and Croatian Ivan Dodig (8th place).
