Low water volume in 10 river basins on the Portuguese mainland

In mainland Portugal, 36% of its territory was in severe or severe drought at the end of May. This month, the volume of water reserves decreased in 10 river basins and doubled compared to April.

The data is taken from the National Water Information System and shows that the Barlavento-Algarvio basin, with 12.7%, is the basin with the least water storage. This is followed by the Mira (34.9%) and Arade (37.1%) basins. Lima (85.4%), Mondego (84.4%), Tagus (84.2%), Ave (82.3%), Cavado (81.6%), Douro (81.5%), Guadiana ( 78.5%), Oeste (73.2%) and Sado. (56.7%) – those with the highest level.

A total of 58 reservoirs were tested (each hydrographic basin corresponds to more than one reservoir), of which 30 had a water supply of more than 80% of the total and 7 less than 40%. According to the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency, the storage capacity of the reservoirs is currently 79%, which is better than in the same period last year, when the reservoirs were 65% full.
