The depression, which will bring heavy rain and wind in Madeira from Monday to Tuesday, has already been named the Oscar, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said this Sunday.
According to the IPMA statement, “the name Oscar has been given by AEMet (Spain’s State Meteorological Agency)” to a “complex depression” that is expected to hit the Madeira Islands and affect the mainland from Wednesday. but with less intensity.
Storm Ana was the first to be named in Portugal in 2017, and the idea came from a collaboration between the Portuguese meteorological agencies (IPMA), AEMet (Spain) and MétéoFrance (France). Names are selected from a predefined list from A to Z.
“There is a system that will affect Madeira due to the large amount of moisture coming from the tropics and will cause heavy rainfall in the archipelago, hence the issuance of red warnings for the Madeira archipelago, and then, from Wednesday, more Wednesday and Thursday, the remnants of this system will affect to the continent, not with that intensity, but it will make a difference,” explained IPMA meteorologist Pedro Souza.
The meteorologist said that from Wednesday on the continent “precipitation is slightly more general, but not as severe as in Madeira.”
