A Porto court has sentenced a former social security worker and her husband to suspended sentences for embezzling about 66,000 euros from social security income (RSI), the Porto Regional Prosecutor General’s Office (PGRP) said on Monday.
In a note published this Monday on its website, the Porto Regional Attorney General (PGRP) said the woman was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and her husband to three and a half years of probation.
The uniform penalty was the result of a legal set of partial penalties applied to defendants for the crimes of qualified unauthorized access, qualified computer forgery, and theft.
The defendants were also sentenced to pay the state about 66,000 euros as benefits of criminal activity, as well as about 62,000 euros in relation to the amount claimed by the Social Security Institute.
The facts took place in the period from 2011 to 2019, the date of commencement of the disciplinary sanction in the form of dismissal of a social protection worker.
The ruling of 24 May proved that the two defendants confiscated public money totaling 66,663.61 euros by artificially creating processes that generate family benefits, namely RSI distribution processes.
According to the indictment, the amounts of these payments were credited to bank accounts belonging to the defendants or third parties, or withdrawn from cash.
