Oscar depression in the eastern group of the Azores with heavy rain and wind from 21:00.

The Oscar depression should hit the eastern group of the Azores with greater intensity from 9pm this Friday, with forecasts for heavy rains and wind gusts that could reach 130 kilometers per hour, according to IPMA.

According to a statement from the Azores Regional Branch of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the eastern group (Sao Miguel and Santa Maria Islands) is expected to be the hardest hit by the Oscar depression. The “critical period” is expected to be between 21:00 local time this Friday (22:00 in Lisbon) and 12:00 on Tuesday.

“Forecasts point to rainfall parameters that could reach cumulative values of 60 millimeters in six hours, and winds with gusts between 100 and 130 kilometers per hour,” meteorologist Carolina Medeiros said in a statement.

In connection with these forecasts, IPMA has issued an orange warning, the second in severity, for the islands of the eastern group from 21:00 this Friday to 12:00, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.

The islands of San Miguel and Santa Maria will continue to be under an orange warning from 3:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Tuesday due to wind forecasts in the direction of the north quadrant.

The depression will also worsen the weather in the islands of the central group (Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico, Graciosa and Faial), causing occasional heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, increased winds and rough seas.

For the central group, IPMA issued yellow warnings from 6:00 pm Friday to 00:00 Wednesday due to rain that could be heavy with thunderstorms.

A yellow warning was also issued for these five islands due to northeasterly winds from Tuesday 9:00 to Wednesday 00:00.

A yellow warning, the third highest on the scale, is issued for “risk situations for certain weather dependent actions”.
