The Madeiran government decided to suspend educational activities in all schools on the island on Tuesday due to the bad weather that is affecting the archipelago, it was announced this Monday.
The Regional Secretariat for Education said in a statement that the decision to “suspend teaching activities in all schools and at all levels of education in Madeira” is due to an update in weather forecasts regarding the passage of the Oscar Basin through the archipelago. , indicating a critical period between 06:00 and 09:00 on Tuesday.
In a note, the Regional Secretariat also adds that the return to normal teaching activities will take place on Wednesday (07 June).
The south coast and highlands of Madeira Island are under a red alert this Monday and Tuesday due to the forecast for heavy and incessant rain due to the passage of the Oscar Basin.
The red warning, the most severe on a three-point scale, was issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and is valid until 15:00 Tuesday.
Bad weather is affecting Madeira International Airport, which has already activated an emergency plan with 28 flights canceled and 12 changed.
The Regional Civil Protection Service and the Municipal Civil Protection Services have mobilized preventive teams and all recommended hiking trails in the mountains of Madeira have been closed, but there are no reports of incidents considered serious.
The municipal service of Câmara de Lobos, a municipality adjoining Funchal to the west, said in a statement that its field deployment consisted of more than 20 operators, citing “some occurrences”, namely landslides in the Faggia areas. das Galinhas, access to which is closed, from Foro and Corrida, to the high regions.
