Azores Civil Protection has registered 11 accidents since early Tuesday morning on Sao Miguel Island, mostly falls from trees and buildings without personal injury.
A statement from the Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores (SRPCBA), released at 9:00 local time (10:00 in Lisbon), indicates that after the passage of the Oscar Basin through the archipelago, “there were so far, 11 cases, all on island of San Miguel.
Situations have been reported “in the municipalities of Ponta Delgada, Lagoa and Povoacao, involving falling trees and falling structures, with no injuries reported,” adds the Azores Civil Protection Service.
Firefighters, the Regional Public Works Authority, the Municipal Civil Protection Services and EDA, the electricity company in the Azores, provide support and resolve incidents.
Azore Civil Protection advises the public to continue to take self-protection measures, taking into account weather forecasts.
Bad weather is also impacting SATA Air Açores, which operates flights between the islands, resulting in “some flights canceled this morning,” according to an Azorean airline source.
Due to weather conditions, an Azores Airlines morning flight bound for Ponta Delgada from Boston, United States of America, was forced to divert its route to Lisbon.
Another Azores Airlines flight from Toronto (Canada), which was supposed to land at 06:40 in Ponta Delgada, was forced to return to Terceira Island due to bad weather.
Due to the Oscar depression, IPMA has issued an orange warning, the second highest on the scale, for the eastern group islands until 12:00 this Tuesday, taking into account precipitation, sometimes heavy, that can be accompanied by thunderstorms.
The islands of San Miguel and Santa Maria remain under an orange alert until 12:00 this Tuesday due to wind forecasts in the direction of the north quadrant.
For the central group, IPMA issued yellow warnings until 00:00 Wednesday due to rain, which can be heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms.
A yellow warning was also issued for these five islands due to northeasterly winds from 09:00 Tuesday to 00:00 Wednesday.
