Flooding after the explosion of the Kakhovka dam claimed the lives of 300 animals in the city zoo

The explosion of the Kakhovka dam flooded several cities on the banks of the Dnieper. About 300 animals drowned in the Novokakhovka Zoo. When zoo officials arrived at the facility around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, nothing could be done. Animals locked in cages and unable to get out drowned.

Monkeys, ponies, mules, bears, raccoons, parrots, marmots, goats, sheep, parrots, ferrets and many other animals did not resist the catastrophe.

Some of the animals that were in the house of one of the guides managed to survive the catastrophe, and some animals, such as ducks or swans, were already swimming through the streets of Nova Kakhovka.

During more than a year of war, the zoo joined forces to be able to continue caring for the zoo animals. The team says they received several donations to buy food, and there were those who welcomed the animals home during the winter.

Now they are grateful to everyone for their help. “It’s a terrible pain. Thanks to everyone who responded to our disaster. But we no longer need help,” the statement said.

The zoo also appealed to the public to save the animals they see on the street, and if they cannot accept them at home, contact the zoo.
