The Basque excicist Txomin Perurenaone of the prominent names in this sport in the 70s, has died at the age of 79 due to an illness, sources from the Gipuzkoan Cycling Federation have confirmed to EFE.
perurenaborn in the Gipuzkoan town of Oiartzun in 1943, lived in San Sebastián and died this Thursday, these sources have indicated.
This athlete began cycling at a very young age and was a professional for 16 years, from 1963 to 1979, years in which he spent time with the Fagor, Kas and Teka teams.
His record includes a second place in the 1975 Vuelta a España and twelve stage wins in the Spanish round. In addition, he was King of the Mountain in the Tour de France in 1974.
After retiring, he was sports director of teams such as teak, Orbea, Rural Box, Artiach and Euskaltel.
Likewise, he was also a collaborator in different media EITBsince he participated as a commentator in both Basque Country Irratia like in ETB.
