New York and Washington like you’ve never seen them before: smoke from wildfires in Canada shrouds the eastern United States

Wildfires in Canada have created a pall of yellowish smoke that has been hanging over much of the east coast of the United States of America (USA) for the past two days. These clouds of smoke threaten the well-being of the population, making breathing difficult and disrupting air travel for millions of people for the second day.

The US National Weather Service, cited by Reuters, has extended air quality warnings for a second day for the East Coast, from New England to South Carolina, and areas of the Midwest. like the states of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

Residents of cities like New York and Washington have been advised to stay at home. These residents donned masks and sought to purchase air purifiers to protect themselves from the smoke, according to Reuters.

Pillars of smoke and reduced visibility prompted authorities to suspend flights arriving at New York’s LaGuardia Airport from the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic region and Ohio for the second consecutive day on Thursday morning.

“This issue is likely to continue or worsen until Friday,” Washington House Speaker Muriel Bowser tweeted. “We urge residents and visitors to follow precautions related to the Purple Code Air Quality Alert.”

Smoke crossed the US border from Canada, where hundreds of wildfires have destroyed more than 3.8 million hectares and forced 120,000 people to flee their homes.

Schools in several cities canceled outdoor activities last Wednesday. Some stores have closed early and major sports leagues have postponed games.

Portugal showed solidarity with Canada and announced this Thursday that it was sending about 100 civil defense personnel to help fight the fires.
