More than 115 schools have been closed and “hundreds more” are “halfway through” due to a strike by teaching and non-teaching staff, the All Education Workers’ Union coordinator who went on strike said this Friday.
“Despite all the attacks and intimidation in connection with the strikes, to date we already had a list of more than 115 schools from the north to the south of the country, completely closed, as well as hundreds of schools at half gas,” said the coordinator of the Union All educational specialists (Stop), André Pestana, who spoke to journalists in Coimbra, next to the school of Martim de Freitas.
Stop has called for this week, Monday through this Friday, a faculty and non-teaching strike that also coincides with the strike for the final evaluation of all cycles (with minimum services set for Year 12).
André Pestana emphasized that the strike “affected all educational professionals”, deciding to pay “special attention to the operational assistants” who joined the fight in large numbers.
“Operating assistants are a nerve-wracking sector of the public school job and they are depleted,” said the Stop coordinator, advocating for a significant salary increase for operating assistants and the creation of a dedicated career for educational activities assistants.
For André Pestana, the strike is “not a corporate fight” but “a fight for public schools.”
The Stop coordinator once again challenged this Friday’s minimum set of services, which applies only to 12th grade, but which he considers “offensive”.
According to the union leader, the meetings with the government were “simulated negotiations” in which the leadership was accused of being “uncompromising” and continuing to “do not value the public school and harm children and youth.”
“We don’t agree that a public school becomes a deposit for children who quickly and superficially go through school, only to have precarious jobs for the rest of their lives,” he said.
André Pestana emphasized that “strike is guaranteed until the end of the month for all measurement tests and all procedures related to the final assessments.”
